Best Sugar Cookies

On July 24, 1971 I baked these cookies and made a note to myself excellent. Forty years later I made these very same cookies for my granddaughters, and they are still excellent. Try them for your family.

NOTE: If you like them crispy use 1/2 cup (1 stick butter). If you like them more cake-like use 1 cup (2 sticks) butter.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp. lemon extract
  • 1/4 cup cinnamon sugar (1/4 cup sugar mixed well with 1 generous tsp. cinnamon)

Preheat oven to 400F.

Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and mix well. Add dry ingredients and start mixing on low speed. Add milk and extract and combine. Wrap dough in wax paper and chill at least 2 hours.

Roll the dough on a floured board. Cut into round cookies and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Place on cookie sheets sprayed with Pam. Bake for ten minutes. Eat!
